About Glenwood, NM & Accommodations

Glenwood is a great place to relax, take in spectacular scenery, enjoy a meal, visit gift shops, and meet friendly, folksy locals. Plenty of history here too. Billy the Kid and the Wild Bunch resided in these parts, as did the Apaches.

Visit the old grave site of Cooney — the cavalry officer who started the mining town of Cooney. Geronimo was born just to the east of Glenwood on the headwaters of the Gila.

What a great pack trip into such beautiful country. The owner/guide Jim was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. The other guides were great. Horses stellar. Great food. Can’t recommend this outfit enough.

Authentic Adventure on Horseback

Wow, what an authentic, real life experience of journeying into the wilderness on horseback- or should I say muleback! Sally was a wonderful mule and as surefooted as they say! I felt so able to be present and witness the shifting light of the day and the rare and beautiful wildflowers (a favorite of mine) in the Gila Wilderness from the back of my steady steed. I slept so well after the long day rides and woke refreshed and ready to go again at dawn. As a person acustomed to boring backpacking food that I have to carry myself, I was delighted to have real milk in my coffee and butter on my toast. What a treat! I enjoyed how the plans of the trip evolved and changed based on he knowledge the crew had of the area and the weather- this was a living, changing real life journey, not some dude ranch style packaged and predictable experience designed for your typical traveler who wants a pre-determined concept of comfort and certainty that checks all the usual boxes. Those places exist and would probably be fun too, but this was a real adventure!

The horses were all so well cared for that some could even be released to wander around the camp area- this was astonishing to me and really spoke to the leader Jim’s connection and care of his animals. I learned so much from Jim, who must have grown tired of all my questions about how he managed and got to know such a large heard of individual personalities. I will certainly be back when I am able to explore more of the area! What a treat!

Unmatched Gila Wilderness Escape

Sorry there aren’t higher marks to choose … easily a “10”. The Gila Wilderness alone blows the mind … especially the trips up & down the middle fork. Jim’s crew made meals hearty and campfire “tales”, taller than the shear canyon walls flanking our over 100 river crossings! The horses & mules are worthy of another “10” for their astonishing sure-footedness & strength under their burdens! A special nod to Cisco, an 18 hand, bear chasing, bread craving mule … and Bombs Away for record breaking obstinance … and Charley my personal “girth-hauling superstar” … heck, all of them a non-stop show. The cliff dwellings truly inspire! The topless skill of 30+ years of Jim M. guiding pack trips makes this adventure one of the most rewarding escapes one could ever hope to find in this insane world!

An unexpected quickening of the soul… such pure beauty, such profound sights & sounds … raw nature at its very best mastered with incredible respect and reverence by our guide & crew. Rivals Yosemite but with no people and completely un trampled. A MUST for family’s hoping to experience nature at its very best!
